La Normandie - France
Mid-century colour pictorial promotional map, 1955

Caption below picture: La Normandie - France
This 1955 pictorial map of Normandy by Remy Htreau, commissioned by the regional government to revitalize tourism after the devastation of World War II, beautifully showcases the regions serene landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and historic landmarks. Rendered in lush green tones, the map highlights iconic sites such as Mont Saint-Michel and Rouen Cathedral, along with charming depictions of local architecture, farms, historical events, and traditional regional products like Camembert and Pont-lvque cheeses, as well as Calvados brandy. Small illustrations of flora, fauna, and historical figures add a bucolic charm. Key World War II battles and dates, including the D-Day landings, the Battle of Mortain, the Battle of Saint-L, and the Dieppe Raid of 1942, are also noted and illustrated. An inset map provides additional geographical context.
