Deux Tractions arrivent au bord dun canal dans un petit coin de campagne non loin de Paris. Cest Maigret et ses hommes. Des morceaux de cadavre ont ete repeches dans le canal, mais comment identifier une victime quand il manque et la tete et les mains ? Maigret, pour telephoner, entre «Au bon Vin», le cafe du coin tenu par Aline Calas et son mari. Quelques questions a la patronne et il apprend que son mari est parti de la gare de Versailles, le vendredi precedent, pour acheter du vin en province. Elle nen sait pas plus. Alors quil interroge Aline, un jeune homme apparait a la vitre du cafe et senfuit sur son triporteur, avant detre rattrape par les hommes de Maigret.......
