WHITBY JET
I have also worked with Jet for a long time,
and am very familiar with its properties.
The jet is darker than shown in the photos,
which are taken indoors under artificial light
Formed from Araucaria tree trunks,
nowadays called a Monkey Puzzle Tree.
This Jet is approx 140-180 million years old !!
When these trees died they sank under the sea,
got covered in sediment, and due to extreme pressure,
the wood cells closed forming a
dense compacted mass we call Jet.
This piece is a rare and great example of a compressed tree trunk.
This item was found in the cliffs around Whitby in NE England.
Size : 180mm across approx
130mm high approx
14mm wide approx
and thinning at the edges.
One face shows Ammonite fossil impressions,
and the reverse face shows wood layering.
It has been cleaned really well, but some
grey sediment has been left just to show
its formation, and genuine location.
I need to sell this collectors piece to fund my building project.
