DESCRIPTION

An interesting piece of travel writing that captures the 19th century colonial attitudes of those travelling throughout the South America.

Starting in Peru, this work is an interesting account of Marcoys journey from the Pacific Ocean to The Atlantic Ocean.

The work is profusely illustrated throughout and contains numerous personal anecdotes. The work also includes, numerous musical notations of melodies from the indigenous groups encountered on the journey.

Institutional stamps throughout each volume, state that this volume was previously from Brooklyn Public Library, New York.

Volume II is unfortunately missing several pages and plates. Volume I however, is complete and in good condition.

Collated incomplete.

CONDITION

In a uniform cloth binding. Externally, smart. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and also to the extremities. Rubbing to the joints. Marks to the front and rear board, heavier to vol II. Hinges are starting but firm. Foxing to the rear hinge of vol 1. Tidemarks to the fore edge of each volume, effecting the gutters of a few pages in each volume. Offsetting to the front and rear endpapers and pastedowns. Institutional stamp to the rear pastedowns of each volume. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are agetoned, and have the odd handling marks throughout. Institutional stamps to each full page illustrations, and perforated stamps to each of the maps. Evidence of worming to the rear of vol II, to the head. Small tears to numerous page throughout each volume. Offsetting to page 303 of vol II, caused by a ribbon. An additional duplicate plate to page 541, loosely inserted. Overall, volume II is in poorer condition than volume I, with several pages missing those being: the pages between 385 and 395, 394 and 403, 410 and 417, 428 and 435, 436 and 439, 558 and 563, 564 and 567, and addition pages to the end of the volume, though unclear how many. There are also four pages detached but present, those being: the half title page for the Twelfth Stage, pages 335-337, and page 563. Though the loss is significant to volume II, volume I remains a very pleasant copy. Would have been a very good copy if not for the loss and handling marks to vol II.

Overall Condition: Good Only
