I have here for sale a rare, very early book about the formative years of the motor car. This is the bound-up volume of 26 issues of THE AUTOCAR: a journal published in the interests of the mechanically propelled road carriage. Volume 23 for July to December 1909. The book starts with issue 715, July 3rd 1909, page 1, through to issue 740, December 25th 1909, ending on page 1056.

These were the early years of motoring, when horseless carriages were being replaced by smelly combustion engines and stables were being converted into garages. But obviously only for the upper crust - the hoi polloi would still have to make do with their public transport.

Absolutely wonderful articles on new inventions and patents such as improvements in the Dunlop detachable wheel, new models of car being introduced to the market by makers who have long since faded into history, races and race courses such as Brooklands, and quirky articles such as comparisons of motor bodies for comfort and appearance.Containing the original advertisements, including a series by Michelin offering information and tips on the maintenance of tyres.

Bound in its original dark green linen hardboards with gilt lettering to the front board and spine, and gilt car illustration to the front board. The front and rear hinges have been reinforced. Binding pulling at page 508/509. Pages clean.This book is in good overall condition. xii+ 1056 pages. 29.5 cm x 21.5 cm.
